Malawi – a small country on a large lake
Education is a human right, it's not a pivilage
Zambia to the west, Tanzania to the east and Mosambique to the south - Malawi, a country 1/3 as large as Germany and only about 1/6 of the population. Few natural resources, no war in this or the past centrury, Malawi is amongst the poorest countries in the world. But Malawi has enormous potential.
Almost half of the population is younger than 15 years old, but only 7 in every 10 children attend school. There is as yet no compulsory school attendance in Malawi and it costs money to attend school. In addition to this, the student-teacher ratio is on average 1 to 60. It is not seldom that lessons are held outdoors. Approximately 40% of Malawi's population is illiterate. Only a quarter of the children complete school, only 5% attend a secondary school.
This is where Support Malawi wants to help. With little money, we can provide support that will have long lasting effects , improving the living conditions on an individual basis and then gradually throughout the entire population. For example, an elementary school teacher costs less than USD 1500 annually, for USD 10000 a school building can be errected.
We are sponsoring selected projects, which serve the educational opportunities of children and adults as well as the creation of economic sustainability.
